Discover and govern Power BI access while applying data-level controls.

About PlainID + PowerBI

Power BI is a business intelligence tool that connects to multiple data sources, enabling users to build interactive reports and dashboards to share insights and support decision-making. It provides centralized access to diverse data, helping organizations understand performance across products, teams, and research.

PlainID delivers centralized authorization management across the enterprise stack. With the PlainID Authorizer for Power BI, security and business teams can easily manage and monitor who has access to which data, ensuring consistent protection whether data is in the source system or viewed in Power BI.

The PlainID Authorizer for Power BI enables centralized policy management, defining and enforcing fine-grained access controls based on user attributes, groups, and context. It provides visibility, auditing, and consistent data security, supporting compliance in complex Power BI environments.

Technical Information

The PlainID Authorizer for Power BI is a fully cloud-based solution that requires no software installation, services to run, or custom code. Organizations can import all existing authorization policies from Power BI to gain full visibility into current access patterns.
They can then create new policies using PlainID’s easy-to-use, plain-language policy builder, which automatically translates them into Power BI DAX policies and deploys them into Power BI.
It delivers dynamic access control based on real-time user attributes, groups, and context for fine-grained data visibility, while offering cross-platform orchestration to centrally manage access policies across Power BI and other SaaS applications, ensuring consistent governance, transparency, and compliance.

Architectures

  1. The PlainID Policy Orchestration Point connects to Power BI to discover existing policies (row-level access) and imports them into PlainID.
  2. Access policies are managed and created centrally in the Policy Administration Point for consistent control across all SaaS vendors.
  3. Policies are then deployed to the Power BI platform.
  4. Users authenticate to Power BI and create interactive reports, dashboards, share insights etc.
  5. Power BI enforces access based on PlainID-managed policies, ensuring users see only authorized data.
